The national survey shows that 32% of those interviewed admitted to having been sexually assaulted when they were under 18 and confirms that this type of crime is far more common than people think, which is why it needs to be discussed and combated. “It's still taboo to talk about sex. And when we do, it's in a pejorative way and not seriously. So when we talk about abuse, we should remember that,” says clinical psychologist Mariane de Macedo.

After all, what characterizes sexual abuse? Mariane explains that when children and adolescents are used for sexual gratification by people who are generally older, this is abuse. “It happens regardless of ethnicity, culture, in various socio-economic and religious backgrounds. The abuser is at a more advanced stage of psychosexual development than the child or adolescent,” she explains.

We usually think of the abuser as someone who is aggressive, who has a bad reputation in society, but they are people who are above suspicion. “And it's precisely because of this that the family finds it difficult to believe the child or young person when they report it. In relationships within the home, which are intra-family relationships, the family tends to deny incest and mostly treats it as a family affair, keeping it a secret and not validating the suffering of the abused,” says the psychologist. In extrafamilial abusive relationships, the statistics are better, but depending on the socioeconomic conditions of the family, in some cases they may turn a blind eye to the kindnesses of the abuser, because they are receiving some kind of benefits, given the scarcity of the family.

Consequences

The physical and psychological consequences of sexual abuse include aggression, eroticization, inappropriate sexual conduct and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. “Suddenly, the person who has been badly beaten will become more introspective, won't accept touches or people getting too close to them,” explains the psychologist, who also points to eating disorders as one of the signs of abuse. “It's an attempt to preserve the body from violence,” she says. Apathy, depression, lack of interest in playing, crying spells are other signs, which are accompanied by feelings of guilt, shame, self-devaluation, lack of esteem, lack of sleep, prostitution, changes in vocabulary and drug use.

“Often, people come to the clinic not because of abuse, but because of chemical dependency, for example. We're seeing a person in psychological distress, who can bring up the issue of abuse. And here we're talking about men and women. The issue of sexual abuse can come up after a long time in therapy,” he explains. Although it's not a rule, it's very common for abused people to become abusers, not because they have the perversion, but because that person has been built up in that promiscuous environment of abuse, which becomes naturalized”.

Information is key

According to Mariane, parents need to be informed about sexual abuse and always vigilant. “Parents need to listen to their children and believe them, no matter how absurd it may seem. You shouldn't disbelieve the child. There's a culture that they lie, but that's not the case when we're talking about sexual abuse, because children can't verbalize or draw a sexual organ, for example, if they haven't built it up mentally. What's more, they can't sustain a lie for long. If they've said something suspicious and you don't want to make an unfounded accusation, investigate, try to look for and observe behavior,” she says. “Night terrors, crying for any reason, behavioral changes are all signs to look out for. Fathers and mothers know their children and know when something is wrong,” she warns.

The psychologist explains that you have to respect a child who doesn't want to kiss family members, for example. “It should never happen that parents force a child to do this. Because of the whole touch thing. If I'm forced to accept that someone I don't want touches me, I'll be forced to accept that someone abuses me. So we have to teach our children what good touch and bad touch are so that they know the difference,” she warns.

How are the marks left on a Spirit that has experienced such violence?

Any kind of violence reverberates in the reincarnating Spirit, causing them psychological suffering and making it difficult for them to fulfill their reincarnation project. Joanna de Ângelis (2014, p. 84), in the book Love, unbeatable love, states that:

Violence of any kind is always responsible for everyday tragedies. Not just the kind that attacks brutally, through shouting and cowardly blows, but also the kind that stems from pride, indifference, systematic and silent persecution, pejorative verbal expressions, discouraging and condemning, in short, any and all resources that disdain other creatures, leading them to innumerable pathologies.

Contribution of the Spiritist Doctrine

In question 383 of The Spirits' Book, Kardec asks the Spirits about the usefulness of going through childhood. The Spirits reply that the aim is to perfect. “In the first seven years of life, the child is more accessible to the impressions it receives. It's as if they were modeling clay. As Spiritists, we have to understand the importance of childhood, which is precisely an important period for their advancement. When they are exposed to abuse, they need a psychological support network, including the Spiritist house,” he says.

“Fraternal and spiritual care for this family is our role,” says Mariane. “We're not here to judge or denounce, but to welcome. The victim must undergo psychological treatment, receive support from the health network and we provide spiritual care,” she adds.

Mariane was part of the team from the Medical-Spiritist Association of Brazil that built the project Turn on a light, The project, she says, was born out of the need for the Spiritist Movement to talk about sexual abuse. “We have to work on prevention and this project aims to help the people who are there in the Spiritist houses, so that they can have the knowledge and, once they have it, be able to provide the correct care. Workers find it difficult to provide care like this because they don't know exactly what content to approach and how to approach it. Sometimes a person receives a child who has been abused and they think it's the role of the spiritist house to report it. No. It's the family who reports it. The spiritist house doesn't have that role. Its role is to welcome! To give the family spiritual care, the support they need so that the family can organize itself spiritually. That's it,” he says.

Simple and didactic, the booklet is a project being worked on by AME-Brazil. “Not all people feel qualified to be able to do this work in their Spiritist houses, hence the importance of the booklet, as well as the seminars we've been holding on the subject,” says Mariane, a member of the Medical-Spiritist Association of Rio Grande do Sul. “The aim of the Spiritist Doctrine is enlightenment and consolation. From the moment we enlighten, we humanize. And with more humanized people, there will be no more room for sexual abuse,” concludes the clinical psychologist.

References

ÂNGELIS, Joanna de (Spirit). Love, unbeatable love.
