Just as the daily consumption of 8g of table salt will trigger hypertension in some individuals and not in others, psychosis manifests itself in genetically predisposed individuals when exposed to specific risk factors. Since the publication of Our Home, In 1945, in the example of Segismundo's reincarnation, we learned in more detail how genetic vulnerability is just a reflection or imprinting of our perispiritual injuries.

For example, marijuana use during adolescence can significantly increase the likelihood of triggering a psychotic episode in individuals with a genetic predisposition, increasing the risk by up to 10 times. Other factors that contribute to the development of psychosis include: unhealthy working conditions, sleep deprivation, post-traumatic stress, traumatic experiences such as muggings or kidnappings, loss of property, immigration and discrimination in a new country. All these factors can increase an individual's vulnerability to psychosis.

Case example

Consider this clinical case that I attended during my second year of psychiatry residency during a psychiatric interconsultation internship. A patient, identified as M, was admitted to the pulmonology ward with delusions of persecution, visual and auditory hallucinations.

M, 46, from Recife and living in São Paulo for the last four years, worked as an inspector and was divorced, with two children living with his ex-wife. He was being monitored by pulmonology due to interstitial pulmonary fibrosis, a condition that can have various causes, including exposure to toxic metals and microbacteria. He was hospitalized with sepsis, a serious infection that started in the lungs and spread throughout the body.

M's psychiatric condition began after his separation. Four years earlier, he had moved to São Paulo after discovering his wife's betrayal, which, in the culture of his region in the Northeast, touches on issues of honor. M faced a deep dilemma between taking revenge on his wife and her lover or forgiving them. He opted for forgiveness, reflecting on the need to know how to lose in life.

This case illustrates the complexity of the factors involved in psychosis. While biological factors, such as corticosteroid use, infections and systemic diseases, can trigger psychotic episodes, emotional and spiritual factors, such as personal traumas and moral dilemmas, also play a significant role. A holistic approach, which takes into account organic, psychological, social and spiritual aspects, is essential for effective treatment.

In this case, in addition to treatment with antipsychotics and a possible reduction in the dose of corticosteroids, the daily presence of family and friends was essential for the patient to feel progressively safer, more protected and enveloped in loving vibes.

From a spiritual point of view, it's important to consider the most severe and chronic psychotic conditions as a possible consequence of behavior patterns that are quite contrary to divine laws, repeated over several successive incarnations. In these cases, the damage is deeper and covers the mental body, while cases of depression and anxiety occur when there is damage to the emotional body. The loss of contact with reality, which characterizes psychosis, can be the brake of divine mercy so that new mistakes are not repeated. However, the suggested approach is to look to the future, as taught by the medium Chico Xavier: “No one can go back and make a new beginning, but anyone can start now and make a new ending”. The idea is to use the past as a reference to avoid repeated mistakes, adopting a posture of growth and evolution.

Psychosis, in clinical terms, is a break with reality, which usually manifests itself through delusions, hallucinations, disintegration of thought or disorganized behaviour. Delusions are unshakeable beliefs, even in the face of contrary evidence. An example is Cotard's syndrome, in which the patient believes they are dead or that their organs are deteriorating, even when confronted with the opposite reality, such as hearing their own heartbeat.

Hallucinations, which can occur in any of the five senses, are perceptions that only the affected individual experiences. Auditory hallucinations are the most common, but visual hallucinations can also occur and are more associated with biological conditions such as brain tumors, exogenous intoxication, metabolic disorders, etc. Disorganized thinking occurs when the individual is unable to connect their ideas coherently, resulting in disjointed speech. Disorganized behaviour can include bizarre actions with no apparent explanation, which can put the individual's own life or the lives of others at risk.

Spiritual obsession or unbalanced mediumship?

There are countless biological and organic causes for psychosis, and it is important to combat the simplistic view that every psychotic condition is due solely to spiritual obsession or unbalanced mediumship. Although spiritual factors have an influence, especially in psychotic individuals who are in tune with unbalanced energies, it is crucial to consider the duality of the factors involved. Effective treatment must encompass the various dimensions of the human being, integrating biological, psychological, social and spiritual aspects.

For example, individuals with a genetic predisposition to psychotic conditions can trigger a psychosis when taking certain drugs, such as amphetamines, anticholinergics and even antidepressants. Parkinson's patients who are predisposed to psychosis can manifest psychotic symptoms when using drugs such as biperiden. Similarly, a patient with a predisposition to type 1 bipolar disorder can enter a psychotic manic phase when taking antidepressants or simply because they have stopped using their mood stabilizer.

As an example, I remember a patient I looked after in my second year of psychiatry who went into psychotic mania after stopping her medication. She walked around the ward wearing hypermakeup and high heels while saying non-stop that she was the president of Brazil.

These examples illustrate how the treatment of psychosis must be integrative, taking into account both biological and spiritual factors. Only in this way will it be possible to offer a truly effective and comprehensive therapeutic approach.

“Each Spirit inhabiting a body brings with it its own baggage of vibrations, values and feelings, which can increase or decrease the risk of developing psychosis.”

Some psychoses can be irreversible, as in the case of schizophrenia, which has no cure, only treatment to ease the symptoms. In univitelline twins who are genetically identical, if one develops schizophrenia, the probability of the other developing schizophrenia is 48%. This shows that although the genes are the same, environmental and spiritual factors or life experiences can influence the onset of the illness. Each Spirit inhabiting a body brings with it its own baggage of vibrations, values and feelings, which can increase or decrease the risk of developing psychosis.

Although daily marijuana use between the ages of 15 and 25 can trigger schizophrenia in genetically predisposed individuals, many cases of substance-induced psychosis are reversible. There are also psychopathologies resulting from systemic diseases, such as kidney failure, hepatic encephalopathy, severe hyperthyroidism and prolonged vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiencies. Other neurological conditions, such as Huntington's Korea, Wilson's Syndrome, epilepsy and strokes, can also cause psychosis.

Spiritist medical vision: aspects that transcend matter

The medical-spiritualist view adds an additional dimension to the understanding of psychosis by considering aspects that transcend matter. The mind is still unknown to science, which also has no clear definition of consciousness. Traditional psychiatry, which operates on a purely materialistic understanding of mental phenomena, is unable to achieve a deeper understanding of mental alienation.

The spiritual-medical perspective encourages a multidimensional approach to the treatment of psychosis, integrating traditional medical knowledge with a deeper spiritual understanding. In this way, the effective treatment of psychotic conditions must consider both biological causes and spiritual factors, offering comprehensive care that encompasses all dimensions of the human being.

Understanding psychosis from this expanded perspective invites us to look beyond the immediate symptoms and consider the broader role that our choices, values and spiritual experiences play in our mental health and overall well-being.

“From a spiritual point of view, the case of patient M., with corticoid-induced psychosis, described at the beginning of the text, can also be seen as an opportunity for learning and growth. He was facing significant challenges: from a dilemma between honor and power, possibly experienced in previous incarnations in which it would be unacceptable to be betrayed and not take revenge, to a current life marked by fragility and dependence. The experience of vulnerability can be interpreted as a spiritual lesson, a chance for the individual to reassess their values and evolve.”

Biological and organic causes

There are a variety of biological and organic causes of psychosis. Some of these include:

substance use - drugs such as marijuana, especially if consumed in adolescence, can significantly increase the risk of psychosis, depending on the individual's genetic predisposition. Other examples include antidepressants and drugs used to treat conditions such as Parkinson's;

medical conditions - diseases such as kidney failure, severe hyperthyroidism, vitamin B12 deficiency, hepatic encephalopathy and other systemic conditions can trigger psychotic conditions;

neurological diseases - some neurological conditions, such as Wilson's syndrome and Huntington's chorea, are also associated with psychosis.

These examples demonstrate that psychosis can be a symptom of multiple medical conditions, requiring a comprehensive and integrated medical approach to diagnosis and treatment.

The medical-spiritualist perspective

From a medical-spiritualist point of view, the mind and consciousness transcend physical matter. Traditional psychiatry, by focusing exclusively on the material aspects of the brain, limits itself to a partial understanding of mental phenomena.

The medical-spiritualist view suggests that in many cases of psychosis, spiritual factors, such as the influence of discarnate spirits or unresolved/traumatic issues from previous incarnations, reverberate in the present life. However, not every psychotic condition is the result of spiritual obsession. The individual's genetic/perispiritual, psychological, social and spiritual condition, including their inner values and feelings, influence their predisposition to becoming mentally ill.

Ultimately, the patient's journey is a reflection of the complex interactions between the physical body, perispirit, mental body and Spirit, and each stage of treatment is an opportunity to promote healing and integral growth. We are all time travelers, learning to love and evolve through the experiences that life offers us.

A vulnerabilidade genética desempenha um papel fundamental no risco de desenvolvimento da maioria das condições médicas.
