Real security: the road to a world free of nuclear weapons

What should we understand by the concept of being safe? What should we defend ourselves against? What is the point of investing in nuclear weapons that are supposed to protect us, but whose potential for destruction would also annihilate us?

The echoes of the Second World War don't seem to have been fully assimilated, as we have unfortunately seen, here and there, threats of the use of nuclear weapons in inflammatory speeches, supported by the supposed search for security and peace. However, it is important to emphasize that there will be no peace as long as nuclear weapons remain behind the curtains that present themselves as protective resources, but which only cover up the selfishness of many leaders. Yes, nuclear weapons still represent one of the most dangerous threats to humanity.

September 26 was the International Day for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, recalled: “Nuclear weapons offer no security, only the promise of annihilation”. The UN has been fighting for disarmament since 1946, just after the Second World War, but without success.

It is unbelievable that today there are estimated to be more than 12,000 nuclear warheads - a potential for destruction capable of wiping out millions of lives, devastating the environment and jeopardizing the existence of future generations. In these years of efforts, several disarmament attempts have been made, but without success. The current geopolitical situation and the ongoing violent conflicts only increase the risks of using these weapons of mass destruction.

On another day that symbolizes this struggle, a high-level meeting was held at UN headquarters in New York. The objectives were to review the transparent dialogue between the nuclear weapon states, encourage a voluntary moratorium on testing, demand disarmament commitments and accountability mechanisms, defend the no-first-use commitment and pressure the major nuclear powers - the United States and Russia - to lead by example in complying with the treaties.

The meeting was yet another effort to mobilize the world for nuclear disarmament. Humanity needs to understand once and for all that there is no gain in maintaining nuclear arsenals. It is unimaginable to think what the world would be like if all the financial resources spent on war technologies were earmarked for human well-being, environmental preservation and scientific research.

The Spirits' Book, In question 742, the Spirits teach us that the real cause of war is still the predominance of the animal nature over the spiritual and the satisfaction of human passions. The good news is that, according to the Spirits, as man progresses, wars will become less frequent and, when they do arise, man will know how to add humanity to them.

This is our hope: that humanity, capable of so many achievements and advances in science, can also drink from the wellsprings of civilization to banish nuclear weapons from the planet once and for all. We will then understand that true security results from our ability to live in harmony, respecting differences, promoting for others the actions we would wish for ourselves and moving away from the blind desire for ephemeral conquests of matter, which mean nothing in our evolution and, on the contrary, only compromise us more and more in the face of Divine Laws.

Let's pray for a world without nuclear weapons.
