On Saudade Day, absence takes on a name, a face and a memory. It is the day when the heart remembers those who have gone and feels, at the same time, the pain of distance and the strength of love that cannot be extinguished. From the perspective of the Spiritist Doctrine, nostalgia is not just a memory: it is a living bond.
The departure of a loved one does not break emotional bonds. The Spirit survives the physical body, maintaining self-awareness, memory, feelings and bonds of affection built up throughout life.
After disincarnation, the Spirit goes through a period of adaptation in the spirit world, which varies according to their moral and emotional state. After this initial phase, many Spirits can follow the lives of family and friends who remained on Earth.
And do they really see us?
In general, yes, they can see us, but not continuously or obligatorily. This depends on a few factors: emotional and spiritual affinity between the incarnate and the discarnate, the vibratory state of both', permission and guidance from higher spirituality.
More balanced and conscious spirits usually visit their loved ones out of love, longing or a desire for support. Others, still disturbed, may find it difficult to perceive the material plane clearly.
Is homesickness felt on both sides?
Yes, nostalgia is not exclusive to those who have stayed. Departed spirits also miss someone, especially those with whom they had deep bonds of love. However, as they evolve, they better understand the continuity of life and learn to transform longing into prayer, spiritual care and silent help.
What do they expect from us?
According to the Spiritist Doctrine, the Spirits who love us do not want our prolonged suffering. Excessive pain, anguished attachment and despair hinder both our equilibrium and theirs. They expect us to go on living, transforming longing into active love in order to cultivate goodness and spiritual advancement.
Living well is often the greatest tribute we can offer.
Saudade: a bond that can't be broken
Longing is not a sign of definitive loss, it is the echo of a bond that continues to exist beyond time and matter. As the Spiritist Doctrine teaches, no one loses the one they love. We just follow different paths, temporarily, towards the same destination: evolution and reunion.
